Vibe vs Playwright: Which to Use for Non-CI Browser Automation

Playwright owns CI and test suites. But for automating tasks across sites you're logged into on your own machine, a real-browser AI agent fits better. An honest breakdown of when each wins.

Playwright is excellent. If someone tells you it isn't, they're selling something. It's the default for browser testing and CI automation for good reasons: deterministic, fast, isolated, scriptable.

But "browser automation" covers two different jobs, and Playwright is built for one of them. This is an honest look at where Playwright wins, where a real-browser AI agent like Vibe wins, and how to pick — no invented benchmarks, just the trade-offs.

Two different jobs

Job A — repeatable, isolated automation. End-to-end tests, CI pipelines, scraping at scale, anything that must run the same way every time on a clean browser. This is Playwright's home turf.

Job B — one-off and recurring tasks across your own logged-in sites. "Pull this number from the dashboard," "triage these tickets," "fill this form with our details." Runs on your machine, against your accounts, ad hoc.

Most people reach for Playwright on Job B out of habit, then spend their time fighting login, 2FA, and session expiry — problems Job A tooling wasn't meant to make easy.

Where Playwright wins

  • CI and test suites. Isolated browser per run, reproducible, headless. Nothing beats it here.
  • Determinism. You pin selectors and assertions. Same input, same output.
  • Scale and parallelism. Spin up many browsers on a server.
  • Logged-out flows. Testing signup, onboarding, or anonymous behavior.
  • Full programmatic control. A real API, typed, with retries and tracing.

If you're in this column, use Playwright. Vibe isn't trying to replace it.

Where a real-browser AI agent wins

Vibe is a Chrome extension with an AI agent in the side panel. It acts inside your actual logged-in session instead of launching a clean instance.

  • Auth is free. You're already logged in, 2FA already happened. No login script, no storageState, no secret store. (More on this in AI browser automation without the Playwright auth pain.)
  • No debug flags. It uses the Chrome Extensions API and content scripts — no --remote-debugging-port, no CDP setup, no separate window.
  • Tasks, not scripts. You describe the goal in a sentence; the agent navigates, clicks, extracts, and fills. No selector maintenance when the page shifts.
  • Model-agnostic. Azure OpenAI, GitHub Copilot, OpenRouter, Grok, DeepSeek, Gemini Nano, or a local Ollama model.
  • Safety on irreversible steps. Read and navigation run directly; submitting, sending, or deleting waits for your approval.
  • Also an MCP tool. Vibe runs as an MCP server, so Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex can drive your authenticated browser as a tool.

The trade-off is the mirror image of Playwright's strengths: an AI agent is less deterministic than a pinned script, and it's not built for clean-room CI or massive parallelism.

Side by side

Dimension Playwright Vibe (real-browser AI agent)
Best for CI, test suites, scale Tasks across your logged-in sites
Auth / 2FA You script and maintain it Already authenticated
Setup Install, write code, manage browsers Chrome extension + a prompt
Debug flags CDP / --remote-debugging-port for existing-browser mode None — Extensions API
Determinism High (pinned selectors) Lower (agent decides steps)
Page changes Update selectors Agent adapts
Parallel / server runs Strong Not the target
Interface Code API Natural language, CLI, or MCP

How to choose

  • Automating a test or something in CI? Playwright.
  • Need exact, repeatable steps with pinned assertions? Playwright.
  • Doing a real task across sites you're logged into, from your own machine? Vibe — you skip the auth tax entirely.
  • Want your coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) to use the browser as a tool? Vibe via MCP.

Plenty of teams use both: Playwright in the pipeline, Vibe for the daily "go check this and tell me" work that never justified a maintained script.

FAQ

Is Vibe a Playwright replacement? No. Playwright is the better tool for CI, test automation, isolated runs, and logged-out flows. Vibe is better for tasks across sites you're already logged into on your own machine.

Why is auth easier with Vibe? It runs inside your real Chrome session, so you're already logged in and past 2FA. There's no login flow to script or session state to persist.

Does Vibe need Chrome remote debugging? No. It uses the Chrome Extensions API and content scripts — no --remote-debugging-port or CDP. Playwright's existing-browser modes generally require debug ports or an explicit CDP endpoint.

Can I use both together? Yes. A common split is Playwright for CI and test suites, Vibe for ad-hoc and recurring tasks across authenticated sites.

Try it

Keep Playwright for CI. For everything you're logged into, let an agent drive your real browser. Install Vibe: vibebrowser.app/install.
