Connect your own AI provider

The Byok plan needs your own AI provider to work; on Pro and Unlimited you can add one too. Your key or login stays inside your own agent, and we never see it.

1. Get your dashboard link

  1. Send /status to @OpenClawBoxBot.
  2. Tap the Web Dashboard link in the reply.

Keep this link private. Anyone who has it gets full access to your agent.

2. OpenClaw agents

In the dashboard, open Settings → Models → Connect provider.

API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, xAI)

  1. Pick your provider.
  2. Paste your API key.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Click Test connection.

Tip: use a key with a spending limit set at your provider.

ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription

  1. Pick OpenAI, then Sign in with ChatGPT.
  2. Follow the sign-in page (or enter the device code it shows you).
  3. Come back to the dashboard when it says you are done.

GitHub Copilot subscription

  1. Pick GitHub Copilot. You get a short code.
  2. Open github.com/login/device, enter the code, and approve.

Pick your new model

  1. In the Defaults card, choose your new model as Primary model.
  2. Existing chats keep the old model until you send /new (or /model default).

3. Hermes agents

  1. In the dashboard, open API Keys and paste your key, for example OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENROUTER_API_KEY, or GEMINI_API_KEY.
  2. Open Config → model, set the provider and default model, and save.
  3. Restart the agent: System → Gateway → Restart.

ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot subscription on Hermes: ask your agent in chat, for example "connect my GitHub Copilot subscription". It runs hermes auth add copilot or hermes auth add openai-codex and sends you a device code to enter.

Claude subscription

Not supported. Use an Anthropic API key instead.

Troubleshooting

  • "Setup required" message: no provider is connected yet. Follow the steps above.
  • 401 error: the key is wrong or revoked. Reconnect with a valid key.
  • Model not listed: connect the provider first, then pick the model in Defaults.
  • Disconnect: remove the key in Settings → Models.
